Surendra Nath Banerjee was the first Indian to pass ICS. He was born in 10 November 1848 in Kolkata.

He founded the Indian National Association in 26 July 1876. Banerji was also fondly known as Rashtraguru.

In 1879, Banerji published the newspaper The Bengalee. He also played a major role in the Swadeshi Movement.
