Newton's first law of motion states that — A body continues in its state of rest or of uniform motion in a straight line unless an external force (or unbalanced force) acts on it.

Or,

all bodies oppose any change in their state of motion.

Example – A book lying on a table is in the state of rest. It will remain so unless some one picks it up or moves it from one position to another.
