Some main differences between Longitudinal waves and Transverse waves are given below —

Longitudinal wavesTransverse wave
In a longitudinal wave the particles of the medium oscillate along the direction of propagation of the wave.

In a transverse wave, the particles of the medium oscillate in a direction perpendicular to the direction of propagation of the wave.
Longitudinal waves can propagate through solids, liquids, as well as gases.Transverse waves can propagate through solids, and over the surface of liquids, but not through gases.
Longitudinal waves consist of compressions and rarefactions.Transverse waves consist of crests and troughs.
